Western Blotting 1:1 Imaging - from sensor to blot imager. ISDI offers various product development routes

The IS1510 CMOS image sensor has been used to design the Spectrum Logic CL1510 1:1 Western Blot Imager - a novel scanner for faster, more accurate results.

Western blotting (also known as immunoblotting) is an established biochemical procedure that identifies particular proteins in complex samples and has applications from straight-forward research to the analysis and diagnosis of infectious diseases. Western blotting can be utilised to decide molecular weight, amount and post-translational adjustments of proteins and can subsequently be an effective device to screen changes in proteins, including expression and modifications.

Traditionally, scientists and technicians have used X-ray film or cooled lens coupled CCDs to get Western Blot results.

ISDI and Spectrum Logic’s novel approach is similar to X-ray film, in that the CL1510 1:1 imager uses direct, one-to-one contact imaging without a lens. This maximises sensitivity by avoiding the optical light loss that is inevitable in a lens-based system. Because there is no lens in the system, it cannot be out of focus and therefore provides very sharp images. Unlike X-ray film, the Spectrum Logic CL1510 1:1 imager uses a state-of-the-art CMOS image sensor, so its output is a digital image or document. Also, it has effectively unlimited dynamic range by virtue of its ability to digitally combine multiple images. In this way, the Spectrum Logic 1510 1:1 imager combines the advantages of X-ray film with the advantages of lens coupled, cooled CCD cameras.

A Western Blot

The imager comprises following components:

  • IS1510 CMOS sensor

  • Read out Electronics with USB interface

  • Lightproof mechanical enclosure

Product Development Routes

Option 1: CL1510 1:1 Imager

CL1510 1:1 Imager

Use the existing Spectrum Logic 1:1 Western Blot Imager- customers receive a plug and play option and can add their own custom branding.

This approach is the easiest and fastest to market. Spectrum Logic has designed and developed a scanner model offering following key features:

• Light weight

• Ready to use

• Software for quick imaging

• SDK available for custom SW development

• IS1510 CMOS sensor bonded to a 2mm Fiber Optic Plate (FOP) or glass

• The mechanical substrate for CMOS sensor module

• The USB interface electronics wire bonded to the sensor.

• Design access to light-proof mechanical enclosure

Option 2: 1510HS-20-WB-SA Sensor Assembly

1510HS-20-WB-SA

Customer can buy 1510HS sensor assembly which includes read out electronics and design their own Imager. This approach offers faster development cycle and competitive pricing to OEM. We can offer 1510HS sensor assembly with glass or FOP protection along with read out electronics. This will have following features:

• Electronics and software available

• Sensor protection with FOP or Glass bonded to sensor

• Competitive pricing

• Quicker development

Option 3: 1510HS-WB-SA (without FOP)

Customer can buy 1510HS sensor without FOP and design their own Imager. This will have the following features:

• Electronics and software available

• Low cost

• No sensor protection

Option 4: IS1510 Sensor

This approach offers the customer a “design your own” opportunity. OEMs can buy the packaged CMOS sensors and develop their own read-out electronics and mechanical enclosure.

This approach will have offer:

• Low cost

• Custom design for mechanics and software

• No Sensor Protection (glass/FOP)

• Longer design cycle
